Aliens Versus Predator 2 - PC

If you’re a typical game player, you already know the story and concept behind Aliens versus Predator. You’ve seen the movies, read the comic books, played with the toys, and maybe even helped Jesse Ventura become governor of Minnesota. In 1994, Rebellion software created what is generally considered to be one of the ill-fated Atari Jaguar’s best games and the definitive use of the license to date, Alien versus Predator. Five years later, the company has remade the game for the PC, bringing half a decade of technology and gameplay advancements to bear on its previous effort, and the result is excellent.
On the surface, Aliens versus Predator is a 3D action shooter of the old (pre-Half Life) school: Armed with a variety of weapons you doggedly, repeatedly move from point A to point B, killing anything in your way, riding on elevators, and flipping lots of switches. Where the game deviates from the norm, and succeeds beyond expectations, is in its rendering of three distinct viewpoints and its effective re-creation of the film series’ unrelieved sense of dread.
Each of the game’s three characters – the titular Predator and Alien, and the hapless human Marine – has his own plot, composed of six levels (five in the case of the Alien). The story portion of these campaigns, though, is virtually missing; the levels have little continuity between them, except for a vague sense that you are traveling from one connected place to another, and equipment acquired on one level does not carry over to the next. Luckily, a lack of coherent plot is not as much of a liability for Aliens versus Predator as it would be for almost any other game, because the history and motivation of each main character are understood implicitly, as they are simply part of the pop-culture landscape. The entire game is essentially a series of set pieces designed to evoke a mood of anxiety and lurking terror. And this Aliens versus Predator does very, very well. Emerging from a cramped hallway into total darkness, scattering a few flares around to discover that you’ve entered a five-story hangar containing a huge alien ship, then hearing your motion detector scream to life as something starts to move in the pitch blackness is an experience in horror unrivaled in gaming.

PES 2013 – PC

In Pro Evolution Soccer 2013, players are given greater freedom over ball control and the way players receive and trap the ball has been improved. Also in PES 2013, characters are more recognizable and the game is more balanced than ever before.

 Yakuza Kiwami PC
If that wasn’t enough (and if you’re not familiar with the overwhelming amount of content in a Yakuza game, well, you’re in for a treat), we’ve added in some new diversions to spice up the streets of Kamurocho, including: Pocket Circuit car racing, MesuKing: Battle Bug Beauties, new hostesses, and more.
So, to recap where we are — Yakuza Kiwami includes new graphics, new voice, new combat, better mission/quality of life improvements, and a roaming nemesis. Sounds good, right? Well, we’re barely scratching the surface:
“But John,” you say. “I’m a Yakuza fan since the original and I know this game backwards, forwards, and inside out!” Don’t fret! Because in addition to all the other things we’ve added, there’s also ~30 minutes of new cutscenes to add in some interesting character depth for the game’s critical path (main story), and best of all — the story adds in some threads that help tie in Yakuza 0!

Final Fantasy 12 The Zodiac Age PC
Square Enix NA has confirmed a Western release for The Zodiac Age, and helpfully provided an English translation for its new features: remastered visuals, true 7.1 surround sound, remastered soundtrack (you can switch to the old version if you prefer), a wave-based ‘trial’ mode, shorter loading times and autosave functionality. Original: The rumoured Final Fantasy 12 remaster has been confirmed. Final Fantasy 12: The Zodiac Age will hit Japanese PS4s sometime in 2017. Yes, I said PS4, but bear with me. Steam currently holds a larger collection of Final Fantasy games than exists on any console, and Final Fantasy 10 Remastered was announced for Steam just a week before it went live. I feel safe getting excited for this one. There’s good reason to think it won’t be confined to Japan either: all the screenshots are in English, including the subtitles. And where’s the risk in bringing it West when all the localisation work is done? Enthusiasts will be pleased to hear that this version will use the International Zodiac Job System for levelling. Characters are assigned permanent roles within the party, dramatically changing their skill progression. Contrary to its name, the IZJS version of FF12 was released only in Asia, although there was an unofficial English patch. PC players are spoiled by emulators of course—you can already play Final Fantasy 12 in 4K if you have the discs to hand. The artwork scales remarkably, let down only by the blurry interface. Is that enough to make you buy The Zodiac Age?

Frostpunk PC

Frostpunk, a new game from This War of Mine and Anomaly developer 11 Bit Studios, is taking a more serious (but still fantastical) approach to what survival means in a video game. The Polish studio’s new title, coming to Windows PC in 2017, focuses on “empathy and decision-making rather than optimization and resource management,” its creators say. The world of Frostpunk imagines what culture and society would look like in a dangerous frozen world where steam-powered technology has been developed in order to fend off the inescapable cold. According to its developer, Frostpunk will feature “complex and demanding gameplay” where players will face tough moral choices. “This is a deeply serious game created for a mature gamer,” said creative director Michal Drozdowski in a release. “Looking back at This War of Mine, we’re pushing boundaries even further, but we’re not pointing at reality in the same fashion. We’re putting human nature under a microscope to ask about what happens when people need to stay alive.” According to 11 Bit, Frostpunk will feature strategy and management elements, but will be an “emotion-driven” game. Details are scant, but a teaser trailer for the game offers a look at the game’s vibe. 11 Bit’s This War of Mine, on which Drozdowski was lead designer, featured a unique take on survival gameplay when it was released in 2014. In that game, players assumed the role of a civilian in a city besieged by war, fighting for resources like food, medicine and shelter while avoiding soldiers and other scavengers.

Gas Guzzlers Extreme PC
Summary: Gas Guzzlers Extreme is an action-packed, fast paced racing game with insane combat features. The game features a variety of cars, from humble superminis, to full on giant yank tanks! The player starts with a low performance vehicle and gradually works their way up by earning money through a series of uniquely challenging races. This game is a welcome addition to the combat racing genre and although it adds nothing new to it, it holds up well against games like Twisted Metal. This genre is severely under-served on the PC and I encourage anyone who enjoyed the likes of Interstate ‘76 to pick this game up. It doesn’t have the story of that classic piece of gaming history, but the action and mayhem are definitely there. In the end, if you’re looking to pass the time by banging metal with metal and blowing stuff up, you can do far worse than what Gas Guzzlers Extreme is offering. I was quite surprised by how well Gamepires managed to turn around this Gas Guzzlers franchise. Races always felt exciting, combat was solid, driving was solid, the customization, vehicle designs, interface, everything. It never actually felt repetitive to me during the single player campaign as I was able to choose what game mode I could play to progress, never being locked into just a bunch of fixed campaigns. This game is also a prime example of why rubber banding in racing games can sometimes be a good thing You’re never just always leading in front, CPUs are always around you, and you’re always fighting them, making races truly feel they have some depth.

Get Even PC
A new breed of first-person action game, Get Even subtlety removes the classic division between single-player and multiplayer experiences to unfold two linked stories. The game’s plot revolves around the memories of its central heroes which have a dramatic effect on how the game progresses. The route the player chooses to follow determines their personality as the game unfolds. The carefully crafted storyline mixes elements of thriller and horror with exploration. As these personality traits are revealed, the merging of single-player and multiplayer elements tighten. When players embark on a single-player mission, others on the network can join the quest as enemies, so players never know whether their opponents are human or CPU-based. This suspense further heightens the player’s feeling of a threat. To create the photo-realistic visuals that bring the gritty universe to life, Get Even is the first game to use large-scale, real-world scanning to create expansive and lifelike environments. This 3D scanning technology combines with advanced lighting effects to create a stunning and believable world that pushes the boundaries of the genre.

Guardians of the Galaxy The Telltale Series PC

Last month news of a Guardians of the Galaxy game from Telltale leaked out, and now the game is official. Telltale unveiled its latest project at the 2016 edition of The Game Awards in Los Angeles, though we don’t know much about the game itself. The teaser is less than a minute long, and contains no gameplay or even any characters. Of course, given Telltale’s previous work — including The Walking Dead and Batman — it’s likely the Guardians game will be an interactive drama featuring a heavy focus on choice. Here’s how Telltale CEO Kevin Bruner describes it: In Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series, players will take on multiple roles within the ragtag band of heroes, and take the pilot’s seat in directing their escapades around the universe. We are always honored to be working with the best creative partners and storytellers in entertainment, and working with Marvel on this series leaves us excited to share what we’ve been developing when it premieres in 2017.

Hellblade PC

Ninja Theory’s Hellblade is coming to PC, PC Gamer can exclusively reveal. The third-person hack-and-slash game from the DmC and Enslaved studio was previously announced for PS4 at Gamescom, but it’ll also arrive on PC with possible mod support and more.“I think PC offers us a level of freedom that we haven’t had before,” the studio’s creative chief Tameem Antoniades told me. “We’re looking at everything we do on this project and figuring out better ways of doing things compared to how the traditional AAA console model works. And consoles are following suit with PC, but I think they’re years behind what things like Steam are doing. If we want to do an open beta right now, it’s a little bit trickier to do that than on PC. Playtesting is a huge thing for us. Usability testing, getting people hands-on to try things out, get feedback, then roll that back in and improve the game… it’s always been essential for us to do that. Not every publisher has let us, because of the secrecy that goes into consoles and publisher-based businesses. As an independent we have the freedom to do that.”The aim is for Hellblade to be future-proof on PC—possibly supporting 4K resolution and maybe even mods, too. “I think we want to get to the point where we can invite players and fans to add to the game, and do things that are unexpected, and suggest ideas or add-ons that can make the game richer.”The full story on Hellblade and my studio visit to Ninja Theory will be in PC Gamer UK 275, which subscribers will start receiving tomorrow and will be on-sale on January 15, as well as PC Gamer US 263, which subscribers will start receiving from January 20 and will be on-sale February 3.

Little Nightmares PC

Do you remember Hunger? You know, the sidescrolling “suspense adventure” puzzle platformer that Shaun suggested was more like Silent Hill than other genre similars? Well it’s been renamed Little Nightmares, it’s set to arrive in Spring of next year, and it has a new official trailer.First, let’s look at that:Taken from last week’s Gamescom, the folks at IGN have also captured ten minutes of Little Nightmares which is equal parts whimsical, equal parts horrifying. (Seriously, the kitchen scene from 2.10 onward sends chills down my spine.) See for yourself:Crafted by Swedish outfit Tarsier Studios—the team behind the PSVita’s iteration of LittleBigPlanet and the PS4’s Tearaway Unfolded—Little Nightmares has been in the works for more than two years, having recently been picked up by publisher Bandai Namco.Playing as the young girl in the hooded yellow waterproof, you’re tasked with escaping a dodgy-looking vessel named The Maw and the monsters which lurk within—all the while outrunning knife-wielding chefs, sussing out lever-based puzzles, and swinging from frozen meat carcasses. As can be seen above, Little Nightmares’ creepy disposition echoes everything from Limbo to Unravel; from LittleBigPlanet to Pan’s Labyrinth, and it looks remarkable/horrendous for it. I can’t wait to give it a bash when it arrives in Spring but, um, I might send you in first.

Hello Neighbor PC
In an upcoming horror PC game called Hello Neighbor, you play a character with voyeuristic tendencies. You’re obsessed with sneaking into your suspicious next-door neighbor’s house to see what secrets he’s hiding in his basement, sort of like Tom Hanks in the ’80s film The ‘Burbs. What makes the thriller game fun to play, though, is that your secretive, shady neighbor AI will go after you if he sees you snooping. He even learns from the way you play, taking every mistake you make into account to get better and better at catching you. He’ll install CCTV cameras if you once snuck in from his front door, for instance, and memorize the shortcuts you’d taken while running from him in the past. It’s as if you’re actually repeatedly sneaking into the house of a real person, who’s getting real tired of your antics. You win once you reach your neighbor’s basement and reveal his secret despite all the traps he laid out.

Injustice 2 PC
Point 1: Injustice: Gods Among Us wasn’t announced for PC either. And yet, here it is. The same goes for Mortal Kombat IX. In both cases we got the Complete Edition with all the DLC, and they mostly worked fine. The only time NetherRealm have released a game for PC day and date with the consoles was Mortal Kombat X, and that did not go down well.Point 2: There’s still a year to go. Injustice 2 has a vague release date of “2017” and literally anything could happen in that time. Mortal Kombat X might get a huge patch and the final DLC pack, Marvel might announce a competing fighting game that’s also on PC and DC wants to catch up, or more likely Warner Bros and NetherRealm are trying to work out whether they can release a polished experience for PC if they release that version the same day as the consoles. They haven’t technically announced a release date at all yet, and PC gets announced late all the time: Quantum Break wasn’t originally meant for PC either, yet that came out the same time on Xbox One and PC too.

Lego City Undercover PC
LEGO City Undercover [official site] is finally on its way to PC, having been banged up on Nintendo’s Wii U since 2013. It’s the LEGO game I’ve wanted most in yonks, an open-world ‘Grand Theft Auto for kiddywinkles’ sort of dealio parodying ’70s cop movies and TV shows. Expect gangs of punks, big boxes of donuts, deep cop funk, and villains with names like Rex Fury. I heard good things about it and I’ll be keen to see myself when the game swings by our way in spring 2017.Undercover stars Chase McCain, a heroic plastic cop who goes undercover to bust the dastardly Rex Fury. Along with story missions, it has an open crimeworld to roam. I do like how his fighting moves have all the bombast and ineptness of TV stuntcops. Our pals at Eurogamer will tell you it’s a cracking game.Warner Bros. announced a Steam PC released yesterday with a wee tweet which didn’t say much. The LEGO gang mentioned that it’s “remastered”, though I’m not expecting a huge overhaul. The LEGO games all look like plastiworlds anyway. I do wonder how they’ll rework the bits made for the Wii U tablet controller.

Lone Echo PC
I reach out to touch the wall and steady myself, but my hands are not my hands. They are robotic, complete with working tendons and empty sections that I can look through. I push myself off the wall and float in space, before twisting my body around and grabbing the corner of the wall on the other side of the room. My hand wraps around it, and I push off again to explore what it’s like to be in space.Lone Echo puts you inside what seems to be a sentient robot in deep space, and the entire movement system is based on grabbing walls and other structures and pulling yourself along, or using the jets on your wrists to get around. You see some gnarly things in the demo I played, including a stressful rescue mission and some moments out in deep space, but I never felt ill. It was like magic.“In space you get around with your hands. If you use your arm, you grab things and you move, and your head is aware that there’s a one-to-one relationship between where your hand is and where we’re then moving your head in opposition in virtual reality. It seems to think that’s correct,” Dana Jan, Lone Echo’s game director, told me. “We’ve cheated, essentially.”It’s a neat trick, and it works. Since my brain links the movement of my arm and hands with the movement of my entire body, it feels “right,” and natural, even though I’m in a virtual weightless environment that may make you a bit sick in real life.“Comfort is the highest priority of the game,” said Nathan Phail-Liff, Lone Echo’s art director. “There’s a lot of little tricks we constantly tweak to make sure comfort is at the forefront.”

Osiris New Dawn PC

The Osiris: New Dawn mission begins in 2046 A.D. after mankind’s revolutionary discovery of near-lightspeed “fold engine” propulsion abilities. This has landed the Osiris expeditionary mission team in the Gliese 581 system 20 light years away. As part of the second colonization team sent by the U.N.E. (United Nations of Earth) to study planets for potential Earth re-population, the spacecraft malfunctions, braking violently from light speed and forcing an emergency landing on the planet’s surface. Players must overcome the dangers of unpredictable weather conditions by building a central base, expanding the structure further with modular units to grow food, creating research centers, manufacturing bays and uncovering the dark events behind the missing Osiris-1 team, threatening Project Osiris.
